Should you hot link your email?
On your contact page you will generally list your email address. Visitors will expect that if they click on your email that will generate an email to you. In order for that to work your web designer will include a hypertext reference with a mailto: link.
Unfortunately by hot linking your email you may receive unsolicited commercial email. These bad people run programs to search web sites for every mailto link. If you utilize a mailto link you will end up on their mailing list.
This decision should be discussed with your web designer. You need to weigh the convenience of your customers versus your distaste for unsolicited email. Many sites have removed their mailto links for this reason.
